Description | Mycobacterium tuberculosis Polyclonal Antibody, FITC. Tuberculosis is a chronic bacterial infection which remains one of the leading killers of young adults world wide. Mycobacterium tuberculosis enters the alveoli by airborne transmission. They are engulfed by alveolar macrophages but resist destruction. Although the exact mechanism is not known, it is suspected that that Mycrobacterium tuberculosis survives by preventing the fusion of the phagosome and lysosome. As the bacterium accumulates it forms a tubercle, spreads to the lymph nodes and becomes a systemic infection. Although treatments for tuberculosis do exist, new strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis that appear to have multiple-drug resistance (MDR) pose a considerable threat to |
