Description | Firefly luciferase Polyclonal Antibody. Luciferase is a luminescent enzyme produced by Photinus pyralis, also referred to as the common eastern firefly or North American firefly. It is known for its role as a reporter protein and can be used to quantify expression levels from promoters in tissue culture and in vivo. Luciferase catalyses the oxygenation of luciferin using ATP and oxygen to produce oxyluciferin, a highly unstable, singlet-excited compound that emits light upon relaxation to its ground state. Bioluminescence assay systems have become increasingly used in biology and medical research laboratories in addition to (or as alternatives to) fluorescence and chemiluminescence detection strategies.
