Background

Tubulin is the major building block of microtubules. This intracellular cylindrical filamentous structure is present in almost all eukaryotic cells. They consist principally of 2 soluble proteins, alpha- and beta-tubulin. Microtubules function as structural and mobile elements in mitosis, intracellular transport, flagellar movement, and in the cytoskeleton. Beta Tubulin is a candidate gene for the microtubule dysfunction that occurs in the immotile cilia syndrome.
