Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) hydrolyzes the β-ester bond of zwitterionic glycerophospholipids. Preferred substrates are phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and their plasmalogen analogues. Phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylserine are also hydrolyzed. It aggressively attacks phospholipids in membranes of intact cells.
