爪肿测量仪设计用于风湿关节炎、水肿、药理作用等研究，精确测量啮齿类动物肢体的肿胀情况。自上世纪60年代起，已经有超过1000篇的引文。该仪器是大、小鼠炎症水肿测量的理想工具，其测量分辨率是0.01ml。

整套仪器包含一个脚踏开关，用于记录读数，从而使得操作人员可以全神贯注于将动物的爪侵没于测量水杯中。液晶屏实时显示实验数据，通过相应软件可方便的将实验数据导入电脑。

爪肿测量仪使用方法简单，将肿胀的大鼠爪放入仪器的水槽中，导致水平面上升，爪肿测量仪测量出水平面上升引起的水压力变化值，该压力变化值对应伸入水中肿胀大鼠爪的体积；对大鼠服用抗肿胀药物，大鼠的爪相应消肿，将消肿的大鼠爪放入水槽中，导致水平面上升，爪肿测量仪测量出水平面上升引起的水压力变化值，该压力变化值对应伸入水中消肿大鼠爪的体积，根据两次水压力变化值即体积的差值评估得出抗肿胀药物的效果。
