Members of the Bcl-2 family of proteins are critical regulators of
apoptosis by either inhibiting or promoting cell death and are
involved in a number of cancers such as melanoma, breast,
prostate,and lung carcinomas. The pro-survival members, Bcl-2,
Bcl-xL,Bcl-w, Mcl-1, and A1 are thought to confer resistance to
apoptosis in such circumstances by antagonizing mitochondrial
membrane permeabilization.
