Description

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), also known as kallikrein 3, seminin, semenogelase, γ-seminoprotein and P-30 antigen, is a 34 kDa glycoprotein manufactured almost exclusively by the prostate gland. PSA is producedFor the ejaculate where it liquefies the semen in the seminal coagulum and allows sperm to swimFreely. PSA is believed to be instrumental in dissolving the cervical mucous caprious aldehydes to their corresponding carboxyolicacids. ALDH plays an important role in alcohol metabolism, convertingacetaldehyde, which has carcinogenic, cytotoxicity, and mutagenicityaffects, into acetic acid. The change in ALDH activity and expressionlevels can be used as a marker for cancer, cancer stem cells, andParkinson’s disease. This colorimetric assay is based on aldehydedehydrogenase-catalyzed oxidation of aldehyde, where the resulting NADHcan then convert a nearly colorless probe to a colored product; theintensity of the colored product is proportional to the amount of ALDHin the sample, exhibiting maximum absorbance at 440nm.
