EZ-TAXIScan is a novel optically accessible device for chemotaxis measurement based on the unique technology developed by ECI. This 6 channel device is easy to use and designed to meet the needs of small-scale chemotactic research.
EZ-TAXIScan can be used for the chemotactic assays of various leukocytes such as neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, mast cells(*2), and cultured lymphoid cells(*3). EZ-TAXIScan may also be applied for chemotactic assays of various cells that could show chemotactic ability such as cancer cells, smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, neurons, cells in developmental stages and other cultured cells and those cells from experimental animals.

• The latest micro fabrication technology

Cells migrate over a horizontal glass surface under a silicon chip made with the latest micro fabrication technology used in the semiconductor industry. The process is filmed with a CCD camera located beneath the glass, which is equipped with a high performance lens and a coaxial episcopic illumination system. Images are taken at time-lapse intervals and saved digitally.

• Accurate and quantitative assays even using small numbers of cells

EZ-TAXIScan can provide accurate and quantitative results in chemotactic assays using 100 cells or fewer. The capacity to analyze cellular movement with so few cells offers an enormous practical advantage when examining cellular behavior in precious samples that are difficult to obtain in large amounts, such as scarce blood cells, subsets of cells at specific developmental stages, and cells obtained from small experimental animals. This technological breakthrough allows experiments once thought impossible to be done.

• Direct real time analysis of cell migration

With EZ-TAXIScan, it is now possible to observe and film in real time cell movements during chemotaxis. This device can make kinetic studies of cell migration dependent on concentration gradients.

The above images filmed with EZ-TAXIScan show the migration of neutrophils toward IL-8. The cells aligned on the edge of the channel (at the top) are now migrating along a concentration gradient of the chemokine in the channel formed from bottom to top.

• Compact Body

Microscopic filming and high precision temperature control functions are integrated in a compact body that fits in any laboratory desk

• Software

Cell movement is filmed by a high performance CCD camera and recorded digitally. The camera moves from one channel to another taking pictures of each assay progress. Changes in cell position are automatically detected and analyzed, and the results are expressed in graphs. The images taken can be observed in a streaming video for further analysis.

• Maintenance free

The device is user friendly and easy to operate. Special maintenance is not necessary. The silicon chip holder can easily be disassembled and cleaned.

• Several types of chips are included

Various types of chips manufactured to the strictest industry standards are included. Depending on the cell type, chips of different depths and forms can be selected according to the needs of the user.
