Galectin-1 belongs to the lectin family of carbohydrate binding proteins with an affinity for β-galactosides.  It is involved in modulating cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, as well as cytokine secretion and inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine production.  Galectin-1 binds glycans as both a monomer and a homodimer and is produced in peripheral lymphoid organs and inflammatory sites. Galectin-1 is an important regulator of acute and chronic inflammatory processes, and is involved in cell growth, proliferation, and induction of apoptosis of activated T cells. rHu Galectin-I produced in E. coli is a monomeric protein consisting of 135aa and having a molecular mass of 14.7 kDa.
